The great buzz word that always pops up around this time of year, ‘’gap year’’ is making its way to conversations taking place in many homes. The end of the year is closing in and there are many students set to graduate high school this year, with no idea what to do next.
Gap It is an affordable, relevant gap year program with the ultimate goal bridge the gap between high school and tertiary education. With a current drop-out rate of 40% for first year students, Gap It aims to make sure that students are equipped to handle their studies and chosen career path. Some of the reasons for this concerning rate whilst doing our study included:
•Failure to set proper priorities
•The company they keep while at university
•Students do not understand themselves well enough
•Lack of interest in their courses
•Lack of social planning and coping
•Lack of self-discipline
•They’re not emotionally ready for university
Gap It is not a university course, but a program which will teach students valuable life skills such as balancing studies and their social life, personal financial management, as well as career studies, planning and management, which will give them the readiness to take on any university or college. They will also focus on entrepreneurial skills, technology training and interview skills. Life coaches and career professionals will be on board to help prospective students make the best decisions for their future, along with aptitude and other relevant tests including career professionals coming onto the campus giving the students the chance to really see the career choice they might have in mind.
The program, which is set to take place at 26a Bradford Road, Bedfordview, is individually focused. It includes an optional tour overseas, which will also be focusing on educating the students in making informed decisions. Students will embark on their gap year beginning February 2017.
